Matsui - Torrance, CA

owned by the famous hideki 'godzilla' matsui, this place serves the best tempura in the south bay area.

i know it's a very bold claim...but it is the best.

and they serve godzilla-size portions.

anywho, the best time to come here is the day after matsui hits a home run. why? because their signature dish.... the ten don (HUUUUGE pieces of AAAAAWESOME tempura served over a bed of rice) is only $5.50!!!!!! get it? his number is 55....he serves it for $5.50....fifty five?!?!?! five fifty?!?!?! the only way it'd be better if it was $0.55.

you can just check this link daily if the deal is available

the tempura here is nice and crispy and not at all oily. they don't even serve their main ten don dish with a side of tempura dipping sauce because it's already so freaking flavorful. i don't really know any other places that is that bold in doing so. additionally, they only serve awesome vegetables in their ten don. no weird bell peppers or large uncooked carrots, but delicious slices of pumpkin, juicy shiitake mushrooms, and delicious broccoli to name a few.

home run hit from matsui
another ridiculous dish that's worth getting is the soft shell crab salad. now i'm not one for salad. in fact i get about one every several....years. but this one is great. soft shell crab is always awesome and they serve their dressing on the side so as to not make the super crispy pieces of crab soggy. great dish to split amongst several people.

yet another homer from hideki
lastly, the sunday special dish is insane in the membrane. for $15, you get a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge plate of food. it just put this place over the top. i mean look at this mess....

7 pieces of tempura. 7 pieces of sushi. bowl of awesome udon. salad. miso soup. side vegetables.

multiple grand slams!!!!!!!!!
i would highly recommend coming to this place any day of the week. but ESPECIALLY after matsui hits a four bagger.

TLDR version: scary good tempura....no pun intended. maybe :|

Chhers, mate!
I didn't know that Hideki Matsui owned a restaurant in the States!
Mind you, he had always said that he didn't plan to pay baseball again in Japan!
Thanks for the great report!
