Bruxie - Orange, CA

i love sandwiches. well love is an understatement. i lust after them. i will sometimes dream about sandwiches. i'll even write songs about them. sometimes i go on facebook just to see if they have any new sexy pictures so i can 'like' them.

Texas Roadhouse - St. George, Utah

i have found my new standard for ribs. im not going to say they're the best, because i havent taken a road trip through the south where im guessing thats where the best is. but if one restaurant has me searching around the oc for ribs because im craving them from this place, im guessing they're pretty good.

what was i doing in st george utah? i know its probably like the 40th most random state i could be in. this. next question.

Five Guys - Huntington Beach, CA

Torihei - Torrance, CA

torihei is a diamond in a field of diamonds of japanese restaurants in torrance. what sets itself apart from other awesome japanese restaurants in this area is that it will freaking explode your mind and then implode it back in.

what's cool about this place is it's great for any occasion. whether it's:
  • coworker get together
  • late night meal after basketball
  • on a date
  • just to grab some light bites and drinks
  • a birthday
  • to invite me and pay for me
  • to find me spending my time on a wednesday
  • if you dress up like this and want to go to a real japanese place

Ludo Bites 007 - Los Angeles, CA

ludo bites 007 could be the best meal i've ever had in my life.

i've been trying to go to a ludo bites experience since version 4, and i'm overjoyed i finally got to go. since they serve everything in small tapas style dishes, me and a friend tried to get one of everything on the menu. while we didn't succeed in getting quite everything (missed like 2 dishes), everything was a hit. not even one airball with the dishes.

everything was perfect. from the flavors, to the variety, to the combination of ingredients, to sauces, to proteins, to the fact that everything was exceptionally cooked, to how awesome i am.

Slater's 50/50 - Anaheim, CA

dear mr. or mrs. slater,

thank you for opening your restaurant that allows the marriage of 50% bacon and 50% beef. thank you for letting others experience what you have discovered at an affordable price. thank you for putting bacon in everything edible. thank you for making supremely superb food.

if i die of a heart attack from one of your burgers, i will die in the best way possible.

here is an artist interpretation of me enjoying one of your burgers and my experience in pictures below that that i hope you will hang in one of your locations.

The Capital Grille - Costa Mesa, CA

the generous pour at the capital grille is the shiznit. it's basically all you can drink wine for $25. not only that, but all the wines have been handpicked and paired with MASTER sommelier george miliotes. i'm not super into wine, but i guess there's only like ten of these kind of guys in the world. almost as rare as one of the below

but yes, you read that right. if you want to drink wine and a lot of it for not too much cashola, come to the capital grille for the generous pour in costa mesa BEFORE 9/4/11 and drink away for only $25. so you got about 3+ weeks to take advantage.

Las Golondrinas - Laguna Niguel, CA

apologies about no updates for like three weeks. work has been crazy....it's stressful and a tough life playing games.

one of the places i went to was san diego for comic con and on the way back up to la, i had to stop at one of my favorite places in orange county - las golondrinas.

Worst Movies of All Time

sorry, sometimes you just have something else on your mind other than food. for me, it happens once every century. so for this one instance in my life, i'd like to discuss the worst movies i've ever seen in my life

Kappo Honda - Fountain Valley, CA

one of three in my holy trinity of japanese restaurants in fountain valley. the other two being shinsengumi and tsuruhashi. its open late, has about 1000 dishes on the menu and its delicious. if you dont think its awesome then you need awesome lessons.

kappo honda is a japanese word, it means tapas. jk, but it should because thats basically how it goes down here. if you like variety, the spice of life, then you'll love kappo.

Original Pancake House - Aliso Viejo, CA

i love oph. love love love it. sure, maybe pancakes aren't exactly your thing (as they aren't really mine either...i prefer french toast much more)

their signature item is their dutch baby

lots of other places serve a dutch baby and oph's isn't much different. doughy, sweet, sprinkle some lemon and sugar on it and you're good to go. just kinda eh. i'd suggest going with something a little bit different and more awesome.

Donuttery - Huntington Beach, CA

not sure which came first between the donuttery and M & M donuts for the blueberry donut.

photo finish!
their blueberry donuts are very similar to M & M except for a couple things...

1. you can get them unglazed, glazed, or with vanilla icing. triple dopeness.
2. there is NO line. huge plus for the donuttery.
3. they don't come out piping hot. sadface.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT......................

Anjin - Costa Mesa, CA

Anjin is a japanese bbq place in costa mesa across the street from mitsuwa. if u like tsuruhashi you'll like this place as well because they're very similar. why review a place just like another? because if one is good, more is better. have you ever heard someone say "no please, i already have too many ferraris" or a girl say "thats too many diamonds on my ring" - no. in the same way, you do not hear people saying "thats too much kobe beef goodness"

remember the drill? japanese bbq
1. order awesome meat
2. cook it perf
3. dip in sauce
4. enjoy
5. smell like awesome bbq meat

Thai Gulf - Huntington Beach, CA

if you think you've found the hidden gem of all hidden gems in orange county and it doesn't rhyme with schmai schmulf, you clearly have not found the most hidden of hidden gems.

i tried to make it look like i'm typing, but it looks like i'm being creepy and peering above a table. hahaha
thai gulf is awesome. for lunch it's $6 and for dinner it's $8 for a COMPLETE meal. and by complete, i mean completely complete.

Scoops - Los Angeles, CA

everyone says that scoops is the best ice cream. the best. i had to know for myself. so apparently they only serve one standard flavor and every day, every other flavor changes.

it's always a surprise going in. even more of a surprise than.....

sharingan you not spoil anything for me, please?

Slow Fish - Huntington Beach, CA

i felt very awkward coming in here because i met up with one of my homies who is a guy and this place is very datish. the mood lighting is very dark and well.....felt quite not heterosexual. not that there's anything wrong with that....just. felt awkward. hahahahaha

since many people just came back from mt hermon, i felt it was appropriate to create a picture that many of you males experienced at camp that was awkward.

it also felt awkward UNLIKE these two do in this picture

this picture will never die! hahahahahaha

anway, on to the review!

Striphouse - Manhattan, NY

not like it was necessary, but this is still the most expensive per person meal ive ever had. total bill for 2 people was well over $400 - but its pricing is very comparable to normal steakhouses we just thought itd be nice to splurge that night.

striphouse is also a chain, the closest location to cali is las vegas at the planet hollywood hotel - same menu nationwide. play at the pleasure pit while you wait for your table - whatever floats your boat.

Slanted Door - San Francisco, CA

My least favorite food in the world is Vietnamese food. It goes:

1. Japanese
2. Mexican
3. Korean
.
.
.
945. Indian
.
.
.
2031. Vietnamese

Maybe it traces back to the first time I had pho and I almost died while eating tripe. Maybe it’s because I’m not sure how much black and red sauce to add to my soup. Whatever it may be, I’m just not a fan.

But this is a fan of Vietnamese food.

That is, until I went to Slanted Door up in San Francisco. After that, everything changed.

Jar - Los Angeles, CA

if you watch top chef masters than you've probably seen suzanne tracht posing outside of it arms crossed, trying to look hard, as they do a bio. still dont know who she is? doesnt matter. what is jar known for? their braised pot roast, and award winning french fries. award winning french fries! these fries are officially cooler than me.

Top 11 Burgers

to give you a little something different than just restaurant reviews all day every day, i'd like to switch it up with something else:

here's my top 11 burgers of all time. you may disagree with some of these selections like any person would, but this is my recommendation on my favorite hamburgers.

Babe's BBQ - Palm Desert, CA

it's bbq. who doesn't love bbq? if you're ever in the palm springs area, i'd highly suggest visiting this place.

below is a picture of some of the stuff i got the last time i went.

tri tip, baby back ribs, rib eye steak, hot links, cole slaw, yadda yadda yadda. their bbq stuff is over the top phenomenal, so there's nothing i can say is super different about their regular dishes other than a place like lucille's, but the three dishes beyond their awesome bbq are the following items.

Thursday, June 16, 2011

Steingarten - Los Angeles, CA

i love gastropubs. who wouldn't? when a location is pinned as a gastropub, you are going to get two things:

1. good drinks
2. good food

Capital Grille - Los Angeles, CA

i came here for a happy hour even that was hosted by gourmet pigs in which everything was free! EVERYTHING. i can't thank them enough because the entire experience was quite awesome. although my experience won't be really like the vast majority that comes here since they'll be spending a lot more and eating a lot of different foods, i tribute this post to gourmet pigs.

Jersey Mike's - Hawthorne, CA

i've never been to new jersey and i've never had any desire to go... until recently.

i've always had the same thought process as ted mosby.

King Taco - Long Beach, CA

one word: UNDERWHELMING.

i was super excited to come here. why?

super excited man! with no super powers!

House of Shabu Shabu - Irvine, CA

kobe bryant, 2006 playoffs game 4. kobe goes layup, then 16 ft jumper - swish, swish. what does this have to do with food? all you can eat kobe shabu shabu.

what is shabu shabu? it literally means "swish swish" and is the japanese version of "hot pot" cooking, where you take thinly sliced beef and veggies, cook them in a simmering pot, and dip it into various sauces. if some is good, more is better - here at house of shabu shabu they offer various all you can eat options. and if all you can eat kobe beef doesnt entice you - then i no longer value your opinion on anything.

Coco Ichibanya - Torrance, CA

coco ichibanya has my current favorite curry outside of japan. and well since it's originally from japan, i guess it's my favorite curry inside japan as well. haha

to start off, before you even get any curry, you can slap on a side salad and a soda for just $1.50 extra. nothing out of the ordinary here as lots of places give you this ability, but the really notable thing about this deal is the salad dressing.

oh.

em.

gee.

it's the salad dressing in the orange bottle btw.

i've bought a couple bottles of this dressing it's that good.

Pee Wee's - Huntington Beach, CA

i'm always looking for the nearest burger joint because nothing satisfies quite like a cheap, delicious burger.

i got some advice to go check out pee wee's which is right across the street from marina high school and i was definitely impressed with this solid burger joint in HB.

Kiku - Huntington Beach, CA

do i have your attention now? good.

kiku is a hidden gem of orange county for sushi. located right next to the westminster mall, it's probably the best thing near the westminster mall since tilt closed down.

Napa Rose - Anaheim, Ca

the reputation of napa rose is that its the best restaurant in orange county.

i have three simple rules that will hopefully give you the best experience at napa rose

1. splurge
2. sit at the chef's counter
3. trust the chef

Thursday, June 2, 2011

let's go down the checklist.

a decent amount of food for a decent amount of money? cheeeckaroni.
dope ambience? cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeckster.
